At Least 6 People Suffered from Food Poisoning-Like Symptoms Due to Botox
The US Food and Drug Administration told CBS MoneyWatch that it is currently working with other federal and state agencies to determine the cause of the outbreak that led to at least six people in Illinois and Tennessee becoming infected after being injected with botulinum toxin.
The Tennessee Department of Health reported that four people in the state developed food poisoning-like symptoms, including two who were hospitalized after receiving possible fake injections.
In Illinois, health officials stressed the need to be cautious towards patients suffering from symptoms of food poisoning after two people became ill and were taken to the hospital due to symptoms including blurred vision, drooping of the face, and difficulty breathing. It was proven that both had received Botox injections from a nurse working in an unlicensed center in LaSalle County.

AbbVie and Allergen Aesthetics are the only approved suppliers of Botox globally, so recent reports of possible food poisoning cases indicate “suspected counterfeit” products.
Allergen, the FDA-approved manufacturer of Botox, told CBS MoneyWatch:
“In partnership with public health authorities, we have confirmed the safety of our Botox and cosmetic supply chain as well as the safety, quality and effectiveness of all the products we manufacture and distribute.”
The so-called “botulism caused by a medical error” occurs due to excessive exposure to botulinum toxin, and doctors advise that the injection process include a product approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and that the injection be performed in a licensed place.
It is reported that in 2023, US Customs and Border Protection officers in Ohio intercepted some shipments containing counterfeit Botox products, which were shipped from other countries such as Bulgaria, China, Korea and Spain.
