Disconnect Your Smart TV from the Internet
Experts warned against continuing to connect the smart TV to the Internet, as many details of the user’s behavior are recorded on the Internet, and this is linked to the companies that produce TVs and the applications used, and the data is often collected without identifying the user.
A report published by the Cybernews website stated that smart TV devices stopping receiving new updates after years of long-term use poses a risk to cybersecurity, given that cybercriminals usually target these devices with malicious software. They spread it via pirated movie apps and firmware.
According to research conducted by Nokia Cyber Security, last year there was a steady increase of 500% in the volume of DDoS attacks using Internet-connected devices and Internet of Things devices. A recent global survey indicated that more than 200 million American citizens own a smart TV.
Smart TVs… Risky Entertainment
Taimur Aslam, co-founder and CTO of technology company Cytex, said the top concerns around smart TVs are around user privacy, as many of these devices include third-party apps, voice assistants, and streaming services. Which increases the risks around the cybersecurity situation.
Pointing out that many connected devices remain active even when they are in standby mode, as devices equipped with voice assistants, which are programmed to always listen, wake up from standby or hibernation mode when the user says the wake-up word or any other request.
Experts advise the necessity of constantly downloading automatic updates, avoiding visiting suspicious websites, stressing the need to avoid installing unknown third-party applications, and being careful to use strong passwords.
